Other Peoples’ Music Distracts Me

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Hi! I’m working on my remix album Unhitched, Restitched, which will be out this summer. Some incredible people are contributing, lots of people I greatly admire. I’m very excited! I am also in the midst of writing and starting to record my next new album, also with a few really amazing people getting involved. I am really humbled that these people wanna work with me, stunned every day and very grateful.

This made me laugh. Meanwhile, I’ve got some mp3s to share! The remix album will be other people remixing and covering songs of mine, so these are not part of it — here you can stream and/or download of my remixes of “Rude Boy” by Rihanna and “Telephone” by Lady Gaga and Beyonce:

There are also still plenty of past remixes and stuff for download in the music section of my website. I also recorded a cover of Josie Cotton’s “Johnny Are You Queer” this week (really quickly, so please excuse the imperfections!) for my mom because she loves the song, and for a certain public Johnny whose explicit queerality is besmokified. Not that I have a problem with that. Everyone’s life is their own. You can stream and/or download that and my cover of Gary Glitter’s “Do You Wanna Touch Me” below as well:

Coming Soon: “Unhitched, Restitched”

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Very excited to say that on June 15 (my birthday!) my remix album “Unhitched, Restitched” will be released worldwide! I don’t have the final track listing yet but the cover art can be seen below. It will be a full LP release with remixes of my songs from 2005 to 2010, lots of brand new amazing stuff! I’ve been very lucky to have some incredible people remix my work, and I can’t wait to share!

For the shoot for the album art I got to work with really talented people: my shirts and the sparkly neckpiece are by Christian Siriano, shoulder jewelry by Micha Design, studded bowtie by Dane Charles, studded necktie by Sam Bennett, large black bows by Kerin Rose, hair and makeup by Kerin Rose and Anna Rexia.

Jewelry by Brad Walsh?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

I’m keeping myself busy these days working on my next album, but I’ve also been making jewelry to keep myself busy. I got a little bit of non-audio creative energy and started gluing things to other things, painting them, twisting them, photographing them, becoming obsessed with them as I do. And I ended up with a collection of rings that I was pretty proud of! So I showed them to friends, and some of my friends wanted to wear some and I posted some pictures and all of a sudden I have a celebrity client list a dozen names long, a ton of sales, rings on the runway, and I’m starting to have pieces pulled for magazine shoots! Blown away and really grateful for all the interest.

Updated: As seen on stars of screen (Mena Suvari, Jenna Elfman, Whoopi Goldberg, Kristen Johnston, Sherri Shepherd); music (Estelle, Kelly Rowland, Adam Lambert, Kat Deluna, Sia, Shontelle, Adrienne Bailon, JoJo, Chantal Claret, Tracy Bonham); television (Barbara Walters, Veronica Webb, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, CariDee English, Alex McCord); and the fashion scene (Amber Rose, Christian Siriano, Sessilee Lopez, Leigh Lezark, Audrey Kitching). Notable press has included features at Vogue Italia, Modelinia, CocoPerez, and JustJared. CLICK HERE for some photos!

On Friday Christian showed his fifth collection at New York fashion week, and I was again of course so proud of, thrilled, and stunned by the great work that he does. It was dark in some parts, light and pretty in others, and made me so excited for the future. Lucky me, I composed the runway music for the show again this season, and as I mentioned yesterday, some of my new rings were on the models as well. The majority of the beautiful jewelry on the runway was by Samantha House, but Christian threw a couple of mine in there as well. The crystal-paved eyewear on three of the models was made by our very good friend Kerin Rose of A-Morir. I’m not making the runway music available to download yet, but here it is to stream:

I was very lucky to sit with our gorgeous friends Kristen Johnston, Kat DeLuna, Mena Suvari, Leigh Lezark, Veronica Webb, and CariDee English, and it was my first day meeting Amber Rose. Amber was so nice and carefree and looked stunning in her blue print dress, which we brought over in the morning. Later that night we had a great after party with a bunch of our friends, and the next day we all surprised Mena for her birthday! All in all a fun & exhausting weekend. Click here to see lots of my pictures from backstage, prep, and the after party. I also threw in there some great shots by Antwan Duncan, who we always invite around on special days because he is a lot of fun and so good at what he does!

On the jewelry front, I added a few new designs since yesterday. You can see them & place an order at this store I set up. Check out the “golden brain!” For the record, I do hope this foray into jewelry-making has some longevity because it’s fun and cathartic, but I don’t consider myself a full-time designer. I’m still very much a musician first, just having fun with this at the moment! Video after the jump… (more…)

For Your E!ntertainment

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Christian and I were watching the Grammys the other night because he dressed nominee Melanie Fiona, and on E! during the pre-Grammy red carpet coverage they aired the promo above, a spot called “E!’s New Look” which features the network stars (Ryan, Chelsea, Joel, the Kardashians, etc.) moving around to my remix of Adam Lambert’s “For Your Entertainment.” I didn’t know beforehand that they were using it, much less that they’d do the unthinkable and credit the remixer by name on the screen in addition to the artist. So it brightened my day! Even if they did speed it up poorly and distort the bassline. But I’m not gonna complain…

I’m recording new demos, so I guess I’m again already on track for a new album of my own. Even though I still have another single coming from the one that’s out now, with remixes by some incredible people I feel humble to share a credit with. The new song I’ve finished is sounding good and different, and every single one of my friends says it’s their favorite thing I’ve ever done! So I am excited to finish and share. Just turned in a couple more major label remixes for other artists that I spent lots of time on, and am very excited to share those when I can as well!

Human Nature Video

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

The video for my song “Human Nature” is out now, you can watch it on Vimeo (above) or on YouTube!

I also have a new remix of my own to share, of yet another song by my friends The Fire and Reason. You’ll remember I remixed their single “Do It Again,” which is the version they used in the video for that song. This time it’s “Bomba,” and you can stream it below. You can also download both of my Fire and Reason remixes on my music page. Also in the player below are the Adam Lambert and Britney Spears remixes I posted in my last post, so keep listening!

Take a listen, too, to the MiiSTMAK3R remix of my song “When We Fight” and the Mikey B Remix of “Boy/Girl (feat. CariDee English)” here:

I curiously dug around my website server stats for the first time in a long time recently and found that there are a lot of you out there downloading my songs. I knew there were a lot but I had no idea it was into the hefty millions! My remix of Britney’s “Womanizer” still tops the download count at 2,888,278 downloads, with my remix of her song “Circus” second at 818,056 downloads. My remixes of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies,” Ashlee Simpson’s “Outta My Head,” and Kanye’s “Love Lockdown” come in at 498,826 downloads, 305,922 downloads, and 150,047 downloads, respectively. Then comes the one full original track of my own that I was stupid enough to leave on my server throughout its entire promo push last fall, “When We Fight,” which has been downloaded 67,859 times; followed by my remixes of MIA’s “Pull Up the People” and Kat DeLuna’s “Unstoppable” at 53,719 and 28,242 respective downloads. The rest of my own albums and my remixes of Adam Lambert and some other artists are not on my server, so they don’t factor into the download counts. But the total number of mp3s that people have gotten from my website in the last two years is an unbelievable 5,161,271 downloads! If I had a nickel for every time somebody downloaded my work… wait… I can’t bear to calculate the end of that.

Happy 2010!

I had an amazing time in Miami for four days with some of my best friends, it was an excellent way to usher in the new year. Our friend Jared, who runs JustJared.com, invited us to his four day party and fun in the sun, and we got to fly out of New York the very moment it started to get reeaally cold. Click here to see some pictures!

I also have two new remixes to share. I was asked to remix Adam Lambert’s debut single “For Your Entertainment,” and the label just released it to DJs yesterday I think, so I’m putting it up here for stream now (no download link, sorry)! I also did an unofficial remix of “3″ by Britney Spears, which you can also hear in the player below, by clicking the right-hand arrow on the opened player to go to the next track. You can download the Britney remix and plenty of my other remixes of other artists in my music section. Listen and let me know what you think!

Welcome to the New Site!

Monday, December 21st, 2009

My site was recently re-done by Adam Morse of Hey Studio, who also recently did my boyfriend Christian’s website and our friend Kerin’s. He’s good at what he does, isn’t he? I don’t think I will be blogging as often as I used to, but updates will be here. My Twitter and Flickr feeds are right here on the home page also, and those I update all the damn time. If you look at the top of the page, you’ll find links to hear my music, see my photographic work, and more. Be sure to see the different galleries within the Photography section, I added one called “Anna,” a prelude to the book about her that I will be putting out next year.

Also, here’s a new remix I did for The Fire and Reason, their song “Do It Again.” This is the version that will be in the video! There is an older, unfinished version of this mix on the net, but this is the final mix. This one also includes a bit of my own vocal added in…

RIP Brittany

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Brittany Murphy was not a close friend of mine by any means, but we had several times together and I always found her to be very warm, concerned about other people, and a lot of fun. I can’t believe she is gone now, too. She was a special person. I suppose I’m already in an emotional state since my grandmother’s passing yesterday. When I heard about Brittany this afternoon it was another thud. When I woke up this morning I decided that today was going to be a good day, made the good coffee, put on some old songs that make me feel good no matter what, and opened the curtains and looked at all the snow on the ground. I’m gonna try again tomorrow.

RIP Grandma

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

My grandmother died this weekend. This is a picture of her and her mother, on the day of her wedding to my grandfather. She and I were never extraordinarily close, but we are extraordinarily similar in a lot of ways. I think we both knew this about each other. I have very early memories of her, wordless memories from before I was a talker. And I have recent memories of her, her house, last Christmas. She had a painting of mine on her wall, a picture of a hot air balloon. She loved hot air balloons, and flowers, and frogs, and birds, and disguising her face on the internet with Photoshop. She had a blog that I loved to read. When I was a kid we watched Animaniacs together. I’m glad she got to meet and have a meal with Christian before she went. She didn’t want a funeral or an obituary, but I can’t not write about her. She was in my life, for my entire life, and she never had any problems with me or who I am. I love her, and I miss her.
