Stupid

A couple weeks ago I posted here saying that I was not in San Francisco because some friends there had been asking me if I was traveling with Christian. They had read some blogs or something saying Christian was there, and that he was going to be at some SF party on April 24. So I said no, I was not there with him, because he wasn’t even there. He was in New York with me, and on April 24 I was going to be DJing in Brooklyn, and he was going to be with me.

Now there’s this (click), which says on April 24 he was in SF and got really drunk and threw up at some restaurant. I initially said it wasn’t true because indeed, he was here in New York with me and hasn’t even been to SF in a long time. So then some people started telling me I must be lying, because they saw him with their own eyes in SF.

No, you didn’t. We were both here. Either there is an impersonator going around or someone is just lying. I’m sure someone’s just lying.

So. To put this to rest: He was here with me in New York at that time. San Francisco didn’t happen. I promise. Also, he doesn’t ever drink to the point that he would do something so classless and stupid as that link says he did. He’s too busy working on too many amazing projects.

What I really don’t understand about this all is that blog I linked to… the author states all of that info as fact. As though it is definite factual news. Not even an intro saying “a tipster tells us…” so isn’t that slander? Illegal?

Slander is spoken, libel is written.
Libel is what the celebs are occasionally suing the tabloids for. It’s usually a civil rather than criminal issue so you get a bit more leniency in those courts but not all the time because it can be difficult to prove, because the issues around what is/isn’t libel are enmeshed with first amendment rights so there’s a lot of “it might be, it might not” stuff depending on all sorts of things, including how the judge is feeling that day [very similar to obscenity laws which most famously have been noted as "I'll know it when I see it".]. That’s why there are lots of tabloids in business and everyone isn’t suing them left and right, it’s time- and money-consuming and not a sure thing that you’ll win so mostly it’s not pursued and the occasional big loss isn’t nearly as big as their profits.

Then there is the whole thing about how non-standard media [the internet! and bloggers, who are not traditional journalists a/o not journalists at all depending on whom you talk to and when you ask] is a new field so there is’t a whole lot of case law on it yet.

Anyway. If you really want to do something you should talk to a lawyer who specializes in internet libel.

i don’t respond to most of the stuff said about me when it happens, but it’s much harder to be quiet when someone’s lying about the people you love.

holy shit. those comments make my stomach turn. it’s disgusting and shocking that people can be so hateful toward someone they a) have never met, b) know nothing about and c) are misinformed about the tiniest bit of information they DO have. i’m with you brad. i’d be livid as fuck.

oh. my. gosh. the comments on that website are really harsh & unnecessarily rude. i believe you.

christian WAS, however, in virginia the next day… april 25th. he came to my school for our fashion show (marymount university). he looked perfect, his hair was in perfect place, and he was wearing an incredibly cute outfit.

i wanted to tell him… “i read your boyfriends blog and i love you two together!!!” but i just asked for a picture and left him alone because 100 other girls were pushing for a picture with him.

My god the comments on there were awful. I almost threw up myself reading them. I don’t know how he, or you can stand it! I’d just quit if I were in his position. In any case, just ignore them, don’t even comment on any of it. :(
