I was telling evan today about the two years in which I made maple syrup from tree sap and realized that that was the best part of high school. At the time it was the most insane and tedious shit – that and looking after the trout in the fish hatchery – but remembering it all now… those things are possibly the most amazing things I’ve ever done. Drilling into trees and attaching tubing, a huge forest of plastic veins going downhill and trickling into stainless steel tubs of clear runny sap, boiling it down 40 sizes into a batch of maple syrup. helping little rubbery eggs turn into the newest members of an endangered species swimming in circles in pools inside a rickety building in the middle of the woods and eventually down the stream. digging up salamanders in the big pile of useless mulch. i miss evan. Life is about the things you’ve done. The people you’ve known and the processes you’ve been a part of. You don’t have to travel if you can’t or don’t want to. I went to Australia for a month and didn’t take any pictures.
